The interactions of textual and visual signs with marvelous mystery. These works highlight the expression of the mind, speak the truth, and exploring emotions. A summer day in the garden and what a joy it is to feel the soft mood under the surface... A gentle, quiet moment of the day in poetic manner enables the viewer to become engaged in the interpretation... Beautiful art work Susy!!!! Many smiles... Robert
Hi Susy, we met briefly in Harrisburg at Kipona. I just wanted to share that I very much appreciate your beautiful and engaging work. I find many of the pieces simply mesmerizing. Website is boookmarked. :) Eric
LensCulture reviewer of my work: "...My first observation/suggestion is about presentation. I can imagine these photos printed large, to inspire feelings of awe by creating a sense of scale for the viewer. Large-scale presentation could prompt the viewer to feel small when confronted by the ideas of standing in front of these mysterious, dream-like scenes. Viewers would feel confronted with unexpected perspectives and that could inspire creative interpretations. My next observation/suggestion also has to do with presentation. I suggest that the photos would be effective in a book. I think your ideas and poetic prose, combined with the photos will make a more cohesive and challenging presentation. Also with a book, the viewer can hold the images, making the interaction more personal and intimate. Your images are very dynamic. They are full of observations and questions about life, transformation, the hidden mind, and its mysteries! Your images prove that being creative with your images is very exciting and who knows where it will lead. Also, don’t feel like you need to be married to the photography world. My advice is that you enter juried art exhibitions and/or show your work within art communities. I think that your images would do well in an “art” environment. Your photos really do cross a lot of boundaries, which is highly encouraged in the art world. Looking through the portfolio I feel like this is very much a cohesive series – visually and conceptually a creative, thoughtful study of the mysteries of the mind in these powerful, color images. This series captures the haunting nature of faceless figures. Human perception targets the face in order to read information that can talk about one’s identity – even if what it reads isn’t true. Your collection of photos is comprised of mysterious portrayals of figure without identity, dreamlike and poetic. The layered, timeless scenes spark the imagination, appearing to be the magical places in dreams or the imagination. I have enjoyed looking at your photos and it is clear that photography is one of your passions! Your images and your project are very thought provoking and creative. They are full of stories waiting to be discovered! I would strongly encourage you to keep pursuing your ideas about aspects of the mind that cannot be photographed. But, look at lots of portfolios that can provide inspiration and creative energy for your project. I suggest that you look at the work of Maggie Taylor, Gerald Slota, and Roger Ballen. I very much enjoyed looking at your photos and I appreciate the way your images are masterfully considered and carefully designed. I hope my review is helpful. I hope my words sufficiently answered your questions and I look forward to seeing what you will do next! (Thank you so much for all of your thoughts!)
“Cardinal” Susy Kamber’s gorgeous artwork “Into Thee” (Rattle, March 2021 Ekphrastic challenge) inspired “Cardinal.” The soft muted colors in Kamber’s work transported me back to upstate New York in mud-drenched March, and the itchy woolen blankets I would bury myself under as a child watching my father’s bird feeder. To me the figure in Kamber’s piece screams cardinal. Flashy, mysterious, elegant, strong. At the same time, there’s this disappearing act in the image, and March itself—a melting, a transition from what is bold and hard, into softness. There’s a bit of ambiguity in the art that I admire, too. We don’t see the figure’s face. A woman, a man? We might guess at a gender, but we might be wrong. A male cardinal is bright red, but who wouldn’t want to inhabit that color, to be that bold, that beautiful—even if just for a season.
